Chocolate Sheet Cake

Chocolate Sheet Cake - it's like a gigantic, decadent brownie with a creamy chocolate fudge icing! This family-favorite recipe was given to me by my mother-in-law, and it is sure to be a crowd pleaser! It's great for birthdays, holidays, anytime! Step-by-step directions and photos are included.

Granddaughter Mia loves to cook, and she is going to help me bake a Chocolate Sheet Cake for her Papaw's birthday. This scrumptious cake involves several steps, so let's get started!

Ingredients for cake and frosting:

3 sticks margarine or butter (divided)
8 T cocoa (divided)
2 cups sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
2 - 1/2 teaspoons distilled white vinegar (divided)
2 teaspoons  vanilla (divided)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup milk + 6 Tablespoons milk (divided)
1 box confectioner's sugar (1 lb.)
1 cup water

Tip: A 1 lb. box of confectioner's sugar = 3-3/4 cups.

Directions:

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease or spray a 12" x 17" sheet cake pan with Pam.

Step 2: To make "sour milk", add 2 teaspoons vinegar to 1/2 cup milk. Set aside.

Step 3: In a medium saucepan, boil 2 sticks margarine, 1 cup water, and 4 Tablespoons cocoa. Stir and set aside.

Step 4: In a big mixing bowl, stir 2 cups sugar, 2 cups all-purpose flour, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

Step 5:  In a small mixing bowl, combine 2 eggs, 1/2 teaspoons vinegar, 1 teaspoon vanilla, baking soda, and the "sour milk" from Step 2. Beat until smooth.

Step 6: Pour Step 5 mixture into dry mixture in the large bowl, and mix well.

Step 7: Let the chocolate mixture cool, and pour it into the Step 6 mixture. Beat well. Batter will be very thin.

Step 8: Pour batter into 12" x 17" sheet cake pan, and shake slightly until smooth. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Let cake cool in pan 5 minutes on a wire rack.

Batter smells like hot chocolate!
Let cool 5 minutes
before adding frosting.

Frosting:

In the medium saucepan, heat 1 stick margarine, 4 Tablespoons cocoa, and 6 Tablespoons milk until margarine melts. Stir; remove from heat. Add 1 box confectioner's sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix well, and pour over the cake.

It's done!
