Run Between the Raindrops!

It's a rainy day! Do we sit around and grumble, or do we make the best of it? Let's learn a lesson from children and keep the sunshine in our hearts as we wait for the rainbow!


When I taught at an elementary school on the side of a hill in West Virginia, our school computers were in an annex building across the parking lot and a short distance down a paved walk. During nice weather, walking to our daily Computer Lab with my First Grade Class was a nice break: a glimpse of sunshine, fresh air, and a chance to sing as we walked along. It was a great time for some fun "Mini-Science Lessons": We often observed evaporation in the puddles as we reviewed the Water Cycle. We saw frogs, butterflies, and other interesting creatures on our way. In the spring, we excitedly saw the first wildflowers and new winter was finally over! Cracks in the sidewalk were home to aggressive blades of grass. We played with our shadows and looked up to see where the sun was in the bright sky.

Rainy days were a different story. On those days, we walked a little faster to stay as dry as possible! I always told my class, "Walk (or run) between the raindrops!" Of course, they always tried! Some would say triumphantly, "I did it! I ran between the raindrops! " Others would grumpily say, "I tried, but it didn't work! I'm still wet!" 

Isn't that just like we adults are? Some of us tend to "Run between the raindrops" when a problem occurs, while others complain that, "It didn't work!"

When my 3 sons were young, we loved to watch Sesame Street. One of my favorite segments was about a rainy day. Here's the lyrics to the first verse of the "Rainy Day" song that they sang:

It's a rainy day;
It's a rainy day.
It's raining outside,
And I can't go out and play.
Why do we need the rain anyway?

The song goes on to explain why we need the rain and all the good things about having enough water. It ends with, "Don't you know I love the rain anyway?" I still sing this song today on rainy days, and it still warms me from the inside out! 

Another favorite song of mine is "Singing in the Rain". My granddaughter Mia and I danced as I sang this song this rainy morning as Mia, Noah, and I twirled our umbrellas while waiting on the school bus. We were having so much fun, it was difficult to stop when the bus arrived!

We could learn a valuable lesson from watching children. What do they do when it rains? If they get a chance, they run, play, fall down, and get back up, laughing all the time! They may get a little wet, but that's okay. Similarly, when they draw pictures, they often draw rainbows with the sunshine peeking out!

It may take a little practice, but let's try it! Remember that every cloud has a silver lining. Sing in the Rain! Run between raindrops! Always keep the sunshine in your heart!
